KTM was founded in 1934 by engineer Hans Trunkenpolz in Mattighofen, Austria, originally as a vehicle repair workshop. The company’s name – Kraftfahrzeuge Trunkenpolz Mattighofen – formed the basis for the abbreviation KTM. However, it was not until 1953, when businessman Ernst Kronreif became a co-owner and the company was registered as Kronreif & Trunkenpolz Mattighofen, that large-scale motorcycle production took off. The first model, R100, set the tone for what KTM would come to represent: technical precision and racing spirit. During the 1960s and 70s, KTM dominated the off-road world with successful motocross and enduro machines, and the brand cemented its position as one of the leaders in motorsport.
In the 1990s, KTM underwent a structural transformation and launched the Duke series in 1994 – a series of naked bikes that quickly became a favorite among city riders and sport riders. Since then, the model range has grown significantly. The Duke series (125, 390, 690, 890, 1290), Super Duke R, and Super Duke GT represent the street line, while the Adventure series – with models like 390 Adventure, 890 Adventure, and 1290 Super Adventure – targets adventure riders who want to explore Europe’s roads and beyond. Meanwhile, the off-road heritage lives on in the EXC, SX, and Freeride models.
